It’s been a hell of a week in UofL athletics. The basketball team is on a roll, football is going to its first bowl since 2006, and the soccer team played in the NCAA National Championship on Sunday. The team that’s got me most excited is the B-ball team. Them boys have been hoopin!
The Cards are now 8-0 and ranked 20th, and 21st in the top 25 polls. We beat two ranked teams this season, the most recent being UNLV, who we handled with a strong run midway through the second half. This win ended our 3 game losing streak to UNLV. Our team is young, but Coach P is giving them the highest praise of any team he’s had in a long time. “Everything that last year’s team was not in terms of focus and knowing the scouting report. Last year’s team had much more talent, but this team has much more focus and humility. Sometimes that makes you a better basketball team.” I couldn’t agree more.
Our team is young, not as talented as last year individually, but as a team we are playing at another level. When one player has an off game, somebody else steps up and picks up the slack. This week Mike Marra had an off game. He was 0-9 from the field and finished with 0 points. The slack was picked up by Kyle Kuric (17 points), Preston Knowles (who had all 20 of his points in the 2nd half), and transfer-guard Chris Smith. Early the morning of the game, Smith tweeted this: “I’m on a war path today look out..” He was not lying. Smith balled in his biggest game to date for the Cards. He finished with 17 points on 6 for 9 shooting; 3 for 5 from beyond the arc. I see big things in Smith, who is the brother of NBA superstar J.R. Smith.
The Cards still have a few tests before the big showdown with UGay (UK) on New Years’ Eve. Our next game is against a 6-1 Drexel team. After that we’ve got WKU. This is becoming a heated in-state rivalry. We have split our last two meetings. (Louisville won last year). Let’s see if we can continue our dominant team play and keep racking up these W’s! #GOCARDS
